The 16th International Symposium on Transportation and Traffic Theory ( ISTTT ) will be held at the University of Maryland, College Park in Maryland, USA from July 18 - 21, 2005.

The ISTTT series is the main gathering for the world's transportation and traffic theorists, and those who are interested in contributing to or gaining a deep understanding of traffic and transportation phenomena in order to develop effective approaches to plan, design and manage these systems. The Symposium deals primarily with the scientific and fundamental aspects of transportation and traffic phenomena, including identification and characterization of previously undocumented or underappreciated phenomena, formulation, observation and testing of new models of and new perspectives on known phenomena, as well as extension, refinement, testing or critique of existing theories and models of known phenomena.

The ISTTT 16 comes at a time when the field is experiencing a major renewal, reflected by the entry of a large number of new scientists from a variety of disciplines, and the mutual coexistence of a growing number of theoretical perspectives and modelling cultures. It is also a time when theories and models developed over the past 40 years are finding their way into professional practice through computer software packages to a greater extent than at any time in the past. It is the aim of the ISTTT 16 to take stock of some of these developments, feature authoritative assessments of their contribution or promise, and engage in constructive debate the greatest and most innovative minds that are actively contributing to pushing the envelope in transportation and traffic science.

Like its predecessors, the ISTTT 16 will keep an open mind about the scope of the conference and what constitutes transportation and traffic theory. Its ambition is to reflect the best work underway anywhere in the world on the science of traffic and transportation. We hope to be surprised by the novelty of some of the contributions, even when they may not fit directly into the line of work represented at previous Symposia.

Peer Review

Contributions to the 16th ISTTT will be evaluated based on scientific merit and the novelty of their ideas. The usual two stage review process will be used. An extended abstract (1000 words) should be submitted electronically (word or pdf format) to the organisers at isttt16@umd.edu by April 30, 2004 , for a first-round review. If the abstract is accepted, a full length manuscript should be submitted by September 24, 2004, for final evaluation. The evaluation will be undertaken by referees drawn from the International Advisory Committee of the ISTTT, and other prominent researchers from around the world. Final acceptance of a paper will thus be based on peer review of the full paper. Authors of accepted papers will be asked to produce a final camera-ready manuscript in Word format by February 25, 2005, for publication in the proceedings by Elsevier (following the tradition of previous Symposia).

The official language for the ISTTT is English.
